Where is my plane coming from? Why the inbound flight decides your delay

Your plane is usually flying somewhere else before it flies you. If that earlier flight runs late, yours departs late too, even when the weather at your airport is perfect and the crew is ready. In US government statistics this is called a late-arriving aircraft delay, and it's the most common single cause of delays. Knowing which flight your plane is coming from tells you early whether your departure time is realistic.

The biggest cause of delays

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) tracks why US flights are late. From July 2025 to June 2026, across all reporting airlines and airports:

By these figures, a late incoming aircraft accounts for roughly 37% of delay. BTS splits a delay with several causes by minutes, so these are shares of delay, not exact counts of flights.

Airlines report a delay as "late-arriving aircraft" when the previous flight with the same aircraft arrived late. They don't report what made that earlier flight late, so a thunderstorm three flights ago can end up as your delay. The FAA calls this ripple effect delay propagation.

How to find your inbound flight

  • Your airline's app or website. Some airlines show where the aircraft for your flight is coming from, often on the flight status page.
  • The gate agent can tell you if the incoming aircraft is late.
  • The departure airport of the inbound. Once you know where your plane is coming from, check that airport for ground stops or delay programs on the FAA's status page (nasstatus.faa.gov). A ground stop there can hold your plane before it even leaves.

Airlines can swap aircraft, so the inbound flight can change up to departure.

What it tells you

  • The inbound is on time: your departure time is probably realistic.
  • The inbound is late: your flight will likely leave late by about the same amount, unless the airline swaps in another aircraft. Crews need time to turn the plane around after it arrives.
  • The inbound hasn't left yet and should already be in the air: expect a delay, and if you have a tight connection, talk to the airline early. Read what happens if you miss a connection.
