Connecting at Madrid-Barajas: how much time you need between terminals

Madrid-Barajas doesn't publish a general minimum connection time. The airport says the time you need depends on your route, your airline, whether your bag is checked through, and above all whether both flights leave from the same terminal.

That last point matters a lot in Madrid. The airport describes itself as having two connection areas: Terminal 4 (with its satellite, T4S) and Terminals 1, 2 and 3. A connection between them means a bus ride and leaving the international transit zone.

The only connection times Madrid-Barajas publishes are the minimums for passengers who use its assistance service. They're not meant for other travellers, but they show clearly how much a change of area adds:

Getting between terminals

The free bus between T1, T2 and T4 runs around the clock: every 5 minutes from 6:00 to 22:00 and every 20 minutes at night. If you're connecting between T1 and T4 Satellite with a boarding pass and your bag checked through, there's a separate free bus from baggage claim hall 1 in T1, on request.

Gates, passport control and security

• Between a Schengen and a non-Schengen flight you go through passport control.
• Changing terminal: the airport warns that you'll leave the international transit zone and enter Spain, so check before you travel that you have the documents you need to do that.
• Security: some airlines require a security check for passengers arriving from other flights. Ask your airline whether it applies to you.
