Connecting at Frankfurt Airport: how much time you need in 2026

Frankfurt Airport doesn't publish a minimum connection time for passengers. What it offers instead is live: once your gate is known, the display boards right behind security and passport control show how long it takes to walk or ride there, from one minute to several.

So is one hour enough at Frankfurt? The airport gives no figure to measure it against. What decides it is whether you change terminal, whether you cross the Schengen border, and whether you go through security again. All three are explained below.

What changed at Frankfurt in 2026

Terminal 3 is open and Terminal 2 is closed. Terminal 3, with gates G, H and J, began operating in 2026, and the flights that used Terminal 2 moved there. Terminal 1 has gates A, B, C and Z. Any guide that still describes connections between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 is out of date.

Getting between terminals

• A free train links Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 from 4:00 to 23:00, every 2 to 3 minutes.
• Late evening and night: from 22:00 to 5:00, a shuttle bus also runs between the terminals.
• Within Terminal 1, if you're connecting between piers A and B in the Schengen area, a passenger tunnel links them between gate A15 and gate B19.

Passport control and security

• Schengen to Schengen: usually no border control. After security, you go straight to the gate.
• To or from a country outside the Schengen area: you go through border control.
• Security: you may have to go through a security check again. The airport asks you to plan time for it and to follow the liquids rules, especially for duty-free purchases.
• Short on time? Most border control and security checkpoints in Terminal 1 have Short Transfer Lanes. If your flight is shown on the monitor at the checkpoint, you can use them as a shortcut to your gate.
• The Entry/Exit System (EES) is being introduced at Frankfurt in stages, and the airport warns it may cause longer waits at border control. Not every border control point has self-service kiosks yet.

Keep an eye on the first flight
